The campaign was organized online on August 28. Although not officially affiliated with pop star Taylor Swift, the coalition leveraged the power of its fan community to attract attention and donations to the campaign.
The campaign featured a number of high-profile speakers, including Carole King and Senator Elizabeth Warren. Speakers repeatedly used Taylor Swift-related quotes and puns to connect with fans, who they hoped would become active volunteers in the upcoming election.
Carole King, one of the keynote speakers, began her speech by praising Taylor Swift. Carole King not only expressed her admiration for Taylor Swift but also shared her belief in Kamala Harris’ leadership abilities. She performed a rap verse of Swift’s hit song “Shake It Off” and emphasized the importance of volunteering on the campaign trail. Carole King encouraged volunteers, even those who are new to the campaign, to participate in door-to-door and phone calls to mobilize voters, with the message: “Nothing to lose and everything to gain.”
Senator Elizabeth Warren kicked off the call, choosing “Karma” and “All Too Well (10-Minute Version) (Taylor’s Version)” as her two favorite Taylor Swift songs. She also delivered powerful messages about fighting Ticketmaster and calling for the “Era of the First Female President.” Meanwhile, online call participants were enthusiastic in their support and contributions to Harris’ campaign, with an estimated $114,000 in donations at the time of the event.
In addition to Carole King and Elizabeth Warren, the event featured Senators Kirsten Gillibrand and Ed Markey, along with Representatives Chris Deluzio and Becca Balint and several members of Swifties for Kamala. Each speaker shared their thoughts on the campaign, mixed with subtle references to Taylor Swift’s music, creating a dynamic that was both political and musical.
The “Swifties for Kamala” coalition was launched after President Joe Biden announced the end of his presidential campaign in July, leading Democratic leaders to quickly unite behind Kamala Harris as a potential successor. While Swift has not officially endorsed Harris or Trump, the star publicly endorsed the Biden-Harris ticket in the 2020 election.
However, Swifties for Kamala is not waiting for public support from Taylor Swift to take action. Rohan Reagan, social media manager for Swifties for Harris, said the group decided to take action even without Swift’s official support. “We are using the Swifties community’s platform to encourage people to participate in the election,” Reagan said. He added that Swift supported Joe Biden in the 2020 election and may do so again this time. However, the group is not waiting for Swift to speak up to take action.
As the election approaches, the Swifties community’s active participation, with or without direct support from Taylor Swift, has demonstrated the power of a passionate fan base to change the political landscape. The Swifties for Kamala coalition is a testament to the power of a community to create social change through connection and shared passion.
