Sharing her usual Instagram post summarizing the shows in each city she visited, Taylor Swift not only paid tribute to her British fans, but also mentioned having to cancel the Eras Tour dates due to a planned terrorist attack during the shows in the Austrian capital.
She wrote: “The cancellation of the Vienna shows is heartbreaking. The reason for this makes me feel both scared and guilty because so many people had planned to attend the shows. But I am also very grateful to the authorities because thanks to them we are grieving over cancelled concerts and not over innocent lives. I am so happy with the love and solidarity of the fans.”
She also added that all the energy she had regained by not performing in Vienna was “blown away” during the last five nights in London. Taylor Swift also shared that from her experience in Austria, her team worked closely with the British authorities as well as the service team at the famous Wembley Stadium to ensure that the record-breaking shows there were safe.
She added: “Let me be clear: I did not speak out at the time because doing so could provoke people who wanted to harm the fans who came to see my shows. In cases like that, ‘silence’ is really a way of showing restraint and waiting for the right moment. My priority was to complete the European tour safely, and I am extremely relieved to be able to say that we did that.”
So far, the main suspect in the incident, a 19-year-old, has been arrested. He planned to target crowds outside the stadium (which could have numbered as many as 30,000 a night) with knives or homemade explosives. Two other teenagers have also been arrested, while a 15-year-old was questioned but released.
This final stop in London also helped Taylor Swift break another world record. During the show, the singer said: “You just made me the first solo artist to perform at Wembley Stadium eight times in a single tour. We will never be able to thank you enough for that.”
The previous record was held by Michael Jackson, who performed at the stadium seven times during his Bad Tour in 1988. Pop group Take That also performed at the stadium eight times during their 2011 Progress Tour .
