Joe Harris, the 2019 NBA 3-Point Contest champion and one of the league’s top 3-point shooters of the 2010s, has officially retired.
The former Brooklyn Nets mainstay has said goodbye to basketball at the age of 32 after 10 seasons at the top of the NBA.
While still playing, Joe Harris brought one of the most interesting personal development stories in the NBA in the 2010s. From a little-known player at the University of Virginia (picked in the 2nd round), Harris was traded by the Cleveland Cavaliers to the Orlando Magic, then released from his contract and “pushed out” in just the second season of his career.
2016 was the year Joe Harris “changed his life”. Brooklyn Nets at that time had many problems in rebuilding the team, unable to find a stable pillar. Joe Harris caught the attention of Technical Director Sean Marks and Coach Kenny Atkinson as a defender.
But the more he played, the better Harris shot, and he gradually became the top shooter in the NBA with an extremely effective catch-n-shoot style.
Joe’s peak period spanned from 2018 to 2021, where he averaged 13.7 points and a “huge” 3-point percentage, reaching 45.8% 3PT.
In addition to leading the entire NBA in long-range shooting percentage for two seasons, Harris participated in the NBA 3-Point Contest and won against Stephen Curry in 2019. He scored 26 points in the final round, convincingly lifting the championship trophy.
In the 2021-22 season, Joe Harris faced a major turning point when he suffered a very serious ankle injury. The 1991-born pitcher’s physical condition and finishing touch were also affected and never recovered to 100%.
Despite a decline in form in his final two seasons (2022-23 and 2023-24), Joe Harris still achieved a career average 3-point shooting percentage of 43.6%, the 5th highest number of all time in the NBA.
